Kelly J. Smith, MD
Dr. Kelly J. Smith, a native of New Braunfels, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas in 1996 and his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 2000. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky from 2000-2004 and served as Chief Resident of internal medicine and pediatrics from 2003-2004. He completed a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX from 2004-2007. He pursued additional training and research in sleep medicine at the Texas Children’s Sleep Center from 2005-2007.
Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (2004) and the American Board of Pediatrics (2004).

Research Experiences
Clinical Research: August 2005 – June 2007
Working with Dr. Leland Fan, (Department of Pulmonology), Dr. Megan Dishop (Department of Pathology), and Dr. Paul R. Guillerman (Department of Radiology) at Texas Children’s Hospital. Responsible for designing and conducting a retrospective, case-control study to evaluate the radiological and pathological correlations associated with bronchiolitis obliterans.
Clinical Research: November 2005 - June 2007
Working with Dr. Daniel Glaze (Department of Neurology), and Dr. Daniel Feig (Department of Nephrology) at Texas Children’s Hospital. Responsible for developing and testing a novel research hypothesis ascertaining the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and the development of essential hypertension in children. Responsible for designing a case-control study to test this hypothesis. Currently conducting an inexpensive pilot study (also a case-control study) to collect preliminary data and to serve as a foundation for further clinical research.
Laboratory Research: June 1995 - August 1995
Worked with Dr. Martin L. Adamo at U.T. Health Science Center at San Antonio. Responsible for research project involving the effects of IGF- I and steroids on proliferation and differentiation of rat C6 glioma cells. Presented findings at Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine annual conference (Ft. Worth), 1995. Gained experience and knowledge in designing and planning a research project, carrying it through, and presenting the findings to the scientific community.

Worked with Dr. Sally S. Atherton at U.T. Health Science Center at San Antonio. Responsible for research project involving the pathogenic mechanisms of ocular diseases caused by members of the herpesvirus family. Responsible also for assisting post-doctorate students in similar projects. Gained knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures in a professional atmosphere.

Worked with Dr. Carlos Campos in a small community clinic in Guadalajara, Mexico. Gained valuable experience communicating with patients in a language foreign to myself. Responsible for presenting historical and physical findings to Dr. Campos. Further immersed myself in the Spanish language by living with a Spanish-speaking family and completing a medical Spanish course at a nearby university.
